It’s often cited as one of the most stressful things you’ll do in life, even more so than getting married, changing jobs or having your first child! But moving house doesn’t have to be the stuff of nightmares. Think in advance of all the things that could create stress, and plan a way to combat them – the extra effort will be worth it!
So what factors contribute to making moving house so stressful? The number of different services you need to deal with is a big source of anxiety for many – from solicitors, to estate agents to mortgage advisors and suppliers. Then you have the ‘waiting game’ – the actual lengthy process from verbal offers to missives being signed can drive people crazy with stress! Then, of course there’s the other lengthy part – keeping your home spotless and letting strangers poke around your private property during viewings.
All things considered, it’s no wonder people find themselves racked with anxiety over moving house! So we’ve used our experience of hundreds of sales and lettings to gather some top tips to help your move be stress free.
- Choose the right suppliers
This is crucial – speak to friends and relatives and shop around. Don’t settle for a solicitor because of a fancy brochure, or an estate agent because of a cheap deal. Choose suppliers who others are happy to recommend. Your most expensive possession is in their hands so pick good quality, trustworthy suppliers. It’ll make everything run far more smoothly.
- Keep on top of communication
The only way to make the waiting game go more quickly is to take care of all parts on your side as quickly as possible. Answer any questions, calls or emails as soon as you can to ensure you don’t hold anything up. If you feel one of your suppliers is dragging their feet, get in touch and chase them up. You are paying them for a service, so don’t be afraid to point out if they are not meeting expectations.
- Be Confident in Viewings
Try to keep on top of your household tasks rather than leaving everything to the night before a viewing. If you aren’t comfortable showing people around, then ask your estate agent for advice and help. This is an important part of the sales process, so try not to see it as a chore!
- Moving Day
When it comes to moving day, make sure you are well prepared. Packing at the last minute is never a good idea, and it will increase the chance of something being forgotten!
